As they become older they are more likely to develop cataracts and tend to gradually get worse over time. Each stage of eye lenses changes causes visual impairment and requires surgery. Usually, doctors will recommend surgery when an individual is suffering from a dense cataract problem and being noticeably affecting your vision. Facing trouble with daily activities of your life such as driving, reading, and seeing is the sign that you may need cataract surgery. These are the specific ways that cataract may disturb your vision include:

  • Impaired night vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Doubled vision
  • Colors appearing faded
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to glare

Types of Cataract Surgery:

Now, there are more modern types of cataract surgery that involve replacing your lens with the transplant known as the Intraocular lens (IOL). Here are some common cataract surgery techniques used by Cataract Doctors in Arizona.

  • Phacoemulsification: During this process, a surgeon will make a 2-3 mm long cut in the front of your eye for an ultrasonic probe. The probe broke down the cataract with the vibration and removed the pieces with suction. A new flexible lens is then inserted through that incision.
  • Manual Extra Capsular Cataract Surgery (MECS): During this surgery, surgeons make the large cut in between 10-12mm long and recover and replace your lens. This technique has a higher risk of complications due to the large cut as compared to the above one.
  • Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS): It involves the smaller V-shaped slit that is narrower outside of an eye but wider inside. The outer cut is around 7mm and internal up to 11mm. It is cheaper to perform but takes time to recover. It is not much effective as compared to Phacoemulsification.
  • Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS): In this surgical procedure, a surgeon may use a laser to make an incision in your eye instead of a manual incision. The laser may divide and soften the cataract by requiring less energy to remove it as compared to Phacoemulsification. It makes the correct incision.
  • Intracapsular Cataract Surgery: It is an older procedure that involves removing the entire lens and lens capsule from the eye through a large cut.

Post-Cataract Surgery Lens Options:

Nowadays, you have several lens options that can be used in replacement for your natural lenses.

  • Monofocal Lenses: It is the most common type of lenses that are usually covered with insurance at the time of replacement. It perfectly sets to maximize your vision at one particular distance.
  • Toric Lenses: It helps in correct astigmatism. It extends to focus to maximize your distance and intermediate vision.
  • Accommodating Monofocal Lenses:  This kind of lens can be adjusted based on the activity of your eye muscles.
  • Multifocal Lenses: This lens will help you to see objects from both near and far by splitting the light that appears into the eye. That light can cause halos in some people’s vision. Before going with this option, you need to discuss this with your doctor.
