The prospect of surgery on your beloved pet in any Virginia Beach veterinary clinic or anywhere else can be mentally grueling and emotionally stressful to their owners more than their pets, which is why it is important to mentally prepare for it.

Feeling anxious about a pet surgery is nothing new and can happen to any caring pet owner and is best that they feel confident and secure about the prospect of surgery as a critical life-saving intervention for their pet.

Pets are unaware

Whether it’s a simple surgical operation or a life-threatening procedure, your pets are unaware of the predicament they are in. Their anxiety or uneasiness is most likely triggered when they find themselves surrounded by other pets in any veterinary clinic Virginia Beach.

In fact, your pets have developed an inherent evolutionary response they inherited from wild ancestors of “hiding” their illnesses to avoid being detected as weak or sickly by opportunistic predators.

It is at this point that their owner must understand the need to be mentally prepared to push through with recommended surgical procedures for the welfare of their beloved pets.

Common per surgical procedures

Common cases that require surgery in a Virginia Beach veterinary clinic are treatment of skin lacerations or abscess, fracture repair, internal bleeding, removing a foreign body that obstructed the intestinal tract, ACL ruptures or torn cruciate, removal of malignant skin tumors, spleen cancer, and removal of bladder stones and other urethral blockages.

While most surgeries are considered low risk, there are instances when complications are discovered as a result of a lingering illness. Nonetheless, ensuring that your pet undergoes surgery provides them a better chance of survival and benefit from interventional treatment that could prolong their lives.

Common instructions prior to surgery

Once you have made the decision to proceed with the surgery, it is important to be aware of important pre-surgical instructions as general guidelines in preparing for the procedures.

  • It is important to follow the veterinarian’s instructions on drinking and feeding a day before the scheduled surgery.
  • Most of the procedures require that dogs or pets have fasted, such as not feeding your pet past midnight the day before the operation.
  • Most dogs or cats are allowed to drink until the morning of the scheduled surgery.
  • Take careful heed of post surgical instructions from the vet and make sure to contact the Virginia Beach veterinary clinic for questions or symptoms that occur that was not mentioned during the post-surgical instructions.

Routine procedures usually take a short time and pets are allowed to go home a few hours after the effect of the anesthesia wears off.

At home, allow your pets to rest and recover in a quiet, warm and comfortable place and carefully follow instructions on administering medication, food, water, assisted care tips, and complying with scheduled appointments.

Following these tips can help you better understand and come to terms with the importance and urgency of surgical procedures. They are more beneficial to you and your pet rather than a cause to worry or prevent you from making that life-saving decision for them.
