         A cigarette is a tobacco product tube-shaped which is made by cutting tobacco leaves finely and wrapping them in thin paper. Flavors and filters are added. A cigarette is lit at any end of it smoked at the other end. This smoke is being taken into the lungs. It usually contains nicotine.

           Nicotine is a stimulant. It is known to be a colorless oily liquid that is toxic and the most active constituent in tobacco (approximately 0.6 – 3.0% of the dry weight). In large quantities it hinders the action of autonomic nerve. Nicotine is present in very small quantities of about 2-7  µg/kg in potatoes, eggplant, and tomatoes. This chemical nicotine is highly addictive and is one of the most abused drugs. Averagely, a cigarette contains about 2mg of nicotine. Psychological dependence, physical dependence sensitization, tolerance are the forms of nicotine dependence. This causes distress and the attempt to withdraw causes anxiety, stress, depression, difficulty in concentrating, sleep disturbances and irritability.

            Cigarettes addict experience mild symptoms of nicotine withdrawal as they only experience normal human moods when the nicotine level in the blood is at its peak. At the quitting period, the symptoms worsen and gradually they get better, however, this can be a long process before they reach normal state. The younger generation is the most sensitive to the dangers of nicotine. These dangers include birth defects and it harms adolescent’s brain development. Cigarette addiction causes other health challenges such as stroke, emphysema, heart disease, chronic bronchitis, and heart disease.

            To treat the addiction of nicotine and cigarettes, there is a need to get help and support which includes nicotine replacement therapy, nicotine patch, nicotine stimulant, etc. A Nicotine patch is a transdermal patch that allows the absorption of nicotine by the body. It is a form of NTR known as smoking cessation. It has been found that more than 20% that go through NRT remains smoking abstinent at one year.

           Nicotine patch has some usage guidelines while using and these include;

  1. No use of snuff
  2. No use of nicotine gum
  3. No use smoking
  4. No chewing of tobacco 
  5. Reading of the information contained in the package is important to make sure that the patch is properly used.
  6. It should be placed on dry, clean and hair skin area.
  7. It should be changed at the same time every day.
  8. While discarding the used patch, it should be removed carefully 
  9. Dispose the used patch properly away from pets and children. 
  10. Place a new patch on an area that another nicotine hasn’t been placed in order not to cause skin irritation. 
  11. The patch can be exposed to water.

             The nicotine patches come in different types according to their nicotine levels we have nicotine patch 21mg, nicotine patch 14 mg, nicotine patch 7mg, and the dose depends on the level of addiction. 

               To treat a cigarette addict, who smokes more than 10 cigarettes per day, 21 mg patch for 6 weeks followed by 14 mg patch for 2 weeks and then 7 mg patch for 2 weeks or 15 mg patch for 6 weeks followed by 10 mg patch for 2 weeks and then 7 mg for 2 weeks would be administered. This is a 10-week therapy and one patch is administered daily For an addict who consumes 10 or fewer sticks of cigarettes a day, 14 mg patch for 6 weeks followed by 7 mg patch for 2 weeks or 10 mg patch for 6 weeks followed by 5 mg for 2 weeks would be administered. This is a 10-week therapy and one patch is administered daily
