A tattoo is one of the most popular body modifications available as well as a form of self-expression. However, it’s not at all uncommon for someone to regret having a tattoo. In fact, 1 in 8 Americans regrets getting at least one of their tattoos.

If you’re a not-so-proud owner of a regrettable ink, you might have thought about tattoo removal. Fortunately, laser tattoo removal is a very popular procedure nowadays.

Before you go and book for an appointment, here are a couple of things that you should know about laser tattoo removal services.

The Removal Procedure

The most basic explanation for laser tattoo removal is that the laser is used to break up the particles of the tattoo ink. Throughout the removal procedure, some ink particles come up to the surface of the skin and the ink that remains in the skin is broken down into smaller particles. Eventually, the smaller particles are broken down enough that it becomes totally invisible.

The technical term for the removal procedure is referred to by the experts as the theory of selective photothermolysis. This refers to the instance that when the appropriate light wavelength and pulse duration are used to remove the tattoo, it will be heated and destroyed, without causing damage to the surrounding skin.

Does It Hurt?

One of the main concerns that patients have is pain. Actually, it’s no more painful than getting a tattoo in the first place. With that said, laser tattoo removal involves some level of pain but it’s usually less painful than many patients expect. Basically, most patients describe the procedure as uncomfortable but bearable.

When you’re treated by experienced cosmetic specialists, you’ll be given some treatment to the skin for numbing the discomfort.

What to Expect After Treatment?

After the removal procedure, it is normal to experience minor pain, swelling, bruising, and other skin irritation in the treated area. For the first three days after treatment, doctors recommend that you apply a thin coating of ointment or healing moisturizer such as Aquaphor, Lubriderm, and many others.

As for scarring, if your tattoo already has scarring features, then expect the scar to remain intact. As for the laser removal itself, it’s very uncommon for the patient to develop a scar. Pigmentation issues may also occur but they’re temporary in most cases.

How Many Sessions to Completely Remove the Tattoo?

This depends on the type of procedure that you choose along with other factors like the size and color of the tattoo. On average, treatments often range from six to twelve sessions. The removal specialists will provide a close estimate of the sessions required.

Not Without Its Risk

Ultimately, laser tattoo removal is an effective procedure for removing unwanted tattoos. However, it’s not without its risks. Before you undergo a laser removal procedure, make sure that you talk with a licensed physician or dermatologist.
