Myths about dental braces

  • Braces are only for children.

Parents tend to give their children braces at an early age because their teeth are still young and can be moved into the desired shape. However, that does not mean that adults cannot benefit from this dental treatment.

No matter your age, you can fix your crooked and misaligned teeth using dental braces. They come in various types, so you are bound to find something that suits you.

  • Braces will set off a metal detector.

There are various types of braces, one being the one with metal wires. This may raise the question of whether wearing metal wire braces will set off the metal detector. The answer is no. At airports and other places where you need to go through the detector, they are not looking for the kind of metal that goes into braces.

  • Braces can permanently fix your teeth.

This is one of the biggest myths about dental braces out there. Wearing braces for an instructed period can align your teeth, but not for a lifetime. After removing the braces, your dentist will give you a retainer which you will have to wear from time to time or as instructed. The retainer is given to keep your fixed teeth straight so they do not come out of alignment.

  • Braces are painful.

While a little discomfort after getting braces is normal and expected, most people do not find an issue with them. Braces may have been uncomfortable a few years ago, but times have changed. Advancements in the dental world have resulted in the manufacture of comfortable orthodontic wires.

Braces nowadays can do the work effectively without causing any discomfort. Some people feel only a little discomfort, but after they get used to it, that is not an issue anymore.
